Fiddlehead Fiesta Weekend

It is a once in a lifetime experience. Well, a once a year experience anyway. The Fiddlehead Fiesta at O’Donnell's Cottages & Expeditions, in Doaktown, New Brunswick, is coming up this May 15-17 & 22-24, 2009.

This springtime learning adventure allows guests to experience a guided canoe trip on the Miramichi River where they will stop along the way to pick fiddleheads. Later, participants will learn how to prepare and preserve fiddleheads and then sit down to enjoy them in a traditional Miramichi supper. It doesn’t get much more Miramichi that this.

The Fiesta begins with a supper on Friday night, includes a two night stay at O’Donnell’s Cottages, a full day of fun, interactive learning about fiddleheads from harvest to the dinner plate, and wraps up on Sunday morning with a breakfast. Participants will also get to take home a recipe for their own use as well as some of their preserved fiddleheads.

The Fiddlehead Fiesta is just one of many adventure packages available at O’Donnell’s Cottages, but it certainly has the shortest duration. Fiddlehead picking is a mere one–two week season, as the harvesting must be done just as the ostrich fern emerges from the ground. The harvesting of this worldwide delicacy is a sure sign of spring along the Miramichi.

  • full day of guided activity picking fiddleheads and preparing them.
